EXT. BOAT ON LAKE POWELL, PAGE, AZ – AFTERNOON.
DAVE, DEVIN, MITCH and SARA are on a ski boat in the middle of Lake Powell. Rock formations surround them. SARA is in a bikini with sunglasses resting on the top of her head; DEVIN and MITCH are in swim trunks, no shirts. DAVE is wearing swim trunks and a t-shirt. They’re passing a joint and drinking Newcastle bottles.
MITCH
(To DAVE) Want to drive?
DAVE nods yes. DEVIN jumps in the water on top of a huge inner tube. DAVE is in the driver’s seat and SARA is sitting on his knee. MITCH is in the back of the boat smoking a cigarette watching DEVIN. DAVE stands up and looks to the back of the boat.
DAVE
(To DEVIN) You ready?
DEVIN gives a “thumbs-up” from the tube in the water.
MITCH
(To DAVE) Go!
DAVE sits down; SARA sits back on his knee, and DAVE floors it. DEVIN is being flung around on his tube, wiping out, catching air, over and over. MITCH watches, amused by this.
SARA
(To DAVE) I think it’s sweet that you called.
DAVE smiles confidently.
SARA (CON’T)
You didn’t have to you know.
DAVE looks seriously and somewhat confused at SARA.
DAVE
I (Beat) wanted to.
SARA smiles, DAVE and SARA sip their beers; MITCH looks on smiling, happy for his friend.
SARA
I’m glad I’m feeling better.
DAVE
Maybe next time I won’t be so drunk.
SARA
(Flirtatious) Next time?
SARA smiles and lightly kisses Dave on the neck. She pulls her shades from her hair to her eyes. The boat speeds along with the wind in their hair looking at the horizon of the setting sun.
Dave takes a long pull of his beer, turns to Sara, and gives her a long passionate kiss, momentarily blocking out everything else.
MITCH
Dave.
DAVE and SARA ignore him.
MITCH (CON’T)
(Forceful) Dave.
DAVE & SARA are still acting oblivious to Mitch’s call.
MITCH
(Yelling) “Dave!”
DAVE breaks off his kiss with SARA, irritated, and turns to MITCH.
DAVE
“What?!”
MITCH
He fell off, dude.
Devin is but a small speck in the distance flailing his arms around in the water pissed off.
